A uniquely yellow-colored residential building visible behind helped us verify the footage.
Our team is verifying video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that depict the aftermath of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. An investigation is under way.
Our starting point to check the location from which the pictures originated relied on social media reports saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the video.
Locating additional buildings, lamp-posts and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
