An Historic Occasion as Rosenior Shatters Obstacles

"Liam Rosenior is a quality tactician who knows football back to front, which is what matters most.

"But, in my role as Chelsea's first African heritage player, I would be lying to claim this appointment fails to move me."

Those are the sentiments expressed by the former Chelsea winger, the man who earned his groundbreaking first appearance for the Blues' first team off the bench in the spring of 1982.

On Tuesday, the club hired Strasbourg boss Rosenior, 41, to be their next manager following the departure of Enzo Maresca.

Strasbourg are part of the multi-club BlueCo which also controls the London club.

Statistics show just twelve of African or Caribbean heritage managers – excluding individuals holding temporary caretaker roles – in the Premier League since its inception thirty-four years ago.

"One thing that impresses me about Liam is he grew up and played locally, he understands the local fans," added Canoville.

"Whenever kids observe a figure like Rosenior managing their club, someone they can identify with, who's from their ends, from a household that fights for equality… that's profound demonstrating the path is there.

"Indeed, it is an enormous moment for the club, for the capital, for all aspiring individual with big dreams.

"But right now? Let's back Liam, provide him with what he needs, and allow him to do his work."

What Does the Numbers Show?

The iconic Dutchman Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' manager back in the nineties and became the Premier League's first African heritage head coach.

A dozen years on, in 2008, Paul Ince became the pioneering English black boss in the top flight after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' boss Nuno Espirito Santo is the only other present Premier League gaffer of colour.

The shortage of managers of colour throughout the English game corresponds with an absence of diversity at executive level.

As per the BFP 2023 study, forty-three percent of top-flight players are from African or Caribbean backgrounds.

Yet, research by the equality organization found just 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams across most Premier League clubs are held by people from ethnically diverse backgrounds.

Regarding first-team coaching positions, according to figures from 11 clubs, the percentage stands at two percent.

Across all coaching roles – including senior roles – from the same 11 clubs, the statistic is just five percent.

"He's certainly broken barriers by virtue of him being announced as a Chelsea manager, and we want to see more of that," said Kick It Out CEO Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists a wealth of talent that exists in the ethnic minority communities... they want the opportunity to show their capabilities. We need to continue to striving to dismantle those barriers once and for all."

Furthermore, the new appointee will become the fourth permanent English head coaches currently managing in the top flight – joining Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – a number that lags behind Europe's other big five leagues in terms of homegrown managers.

16 of the 20 first division managers in Serie A are Italian, Eleven in La Liga are Spanish, Twelve of the 18 are German while 10 of the 18 in France.

The present Blues interim boss Calum McFarlane commented: "I have no doubt every aspiring British coaches from an academy background will be, to some degree no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It's truly motivating to up-and-coming British academy coaches to witness an individual land that job with his background and we hope he does highly successful."

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with the likes of Fulham, West Ham and Queens Park Rangers, with his coaching stint culminating in a five-month spell in charge of the third-tier club Brentford FC back in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's 2019 New Year Honours for services rendered to tackling inequality within the sport and beyond.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he followed his father's footsteps. He started penning a column for a national newspaper, and in one piece he addressed the lack of diversity of black coaches. He pointed out that race does not influence coaching skill and said roles must be awarded on merit.

He further expressed the view he would repeat: that vast lack of diversity results in a failure to understand of players with diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.

In a podcast for a football podcast, he explained how his star striker, Emmanuel Emegha, was labelled "difficult" and "passionate", noting that he could relate to the Netherlands player with Nigerian parentage. The striker is expected to follow him with a move from France to West London this summer.

In further newspaper articles, he also confessed he was "embarrassed" to hear a staff member utter a homophobic slur. He pledged support for the Premier League's inclusion initiative and authored a public message to Donald Trump while he was in office, condemning his "blatant" racism.

He has subsequently made his name as a manager – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week Rosenior was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their time together at Derby County.

The manager bid his farewells to his former club earlier this week before signing a six‑and‑a‑half‑year deal with the Blues.

Chelsea had the Premier League's pioneering black manager with Gullit and the first black captain named Paul Elliott.
