Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Significant Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel introduced a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.

A Major Commitment

In mid-December, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.

"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and helped it grow," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

Network Praise

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He shouted out the fans who found the show and championed its distinctly quirky sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, praised it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.

Previously, creator Joe Cappa shared his desire to move the comedy genre beyond its current sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we are trapped in,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we must laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”

What Comes Next

Now, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well help usher in that change he described. At a minimum, the renewal guarantees audiences more opportunities to bask in the heartfelt moments of the beloved Campbell clan.

The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is currently streaming on HBO Max.
